Week 7: Examples of the Five Master Shots

This week we were asked to post examples of the five master shots that we filmed last week from actual film. I found this fairly difficult because I don’t watch a lot of movies, but I was able to find some things regardless.

The first example I found was of Leit Motiff. This was found in the show “The Great British Bake Off.” I’ve never watched this show before, but I noticed that they used suspenseful music when showing the desserts before they were judged. Here are some clips:

Next, I found an example of parallelism in the movie “The Breakfast Club.” While the tudents wall through the corridor, the teacher is seen walking in the same hallway at the same time. This could also be seen as an example of simultaneity. Here is the clip:

The next shot I chose was an example of symbolism. I chose a scene from “Snow White,” in which the witch offers Snow White a red poisoned apple. First, the apple symbolizes the original sin from the Bible. However, beyond that, the vultures are used to symbolize the witch and the birds are used to symbolize Snow White. The interactions between the singing birds and the cruel looking vultures are similar to that of the witch and Snow White. Here is a clip of the scene:

The next shot is an example of contrast. In this shot from Hell’s Kitchen, the dressed up audience is seen entering the restaurant while the chefs are hastily preparing meals in a busy kitchen. This shows the difference between what’s going on outside and what’s going on in the kitchen. This could also be used for simultaneity, as the two contrasting events are occurring at the same time. Here is a clip of the shot:

Finally, I have another shot from Gordon Ramsey’s “Hell’s Kitchen.” However, this shot is used as an example of simultaneity. In this shot, the menu is shown at the same time that the chefs finish their dishes. This shows how both things are happening at once and how they are related. Here is a clip:
